Why Progression Systems Hook You So Hard

Why Progression Systems Hook You So Hard

July 18, 2026 · Henrik Vogel

Every game on my phone is quietly competing for the same thing: one more tap. The ones that win understand progression, the drip of small rewards that makes stopping feel like leaving money on the table.

The honest systems reward skill and curiosity. You beat a hard fight, you unlock a new region, you earn the next thing. The manipulative ones reward attendance, handing out trophies just for showing up at the right minute.

After years of playing, I've learned to notice which kind I'm in. If I'm excited to see what's next, that's a good loop. If I feel a tug of obligation, that's a timer dressed up as fun.

None of this is secret, but naming it helps. Once you see the hooks, you get to decide which ones you actually enjoy.
